Types of Engineering that you might want to study

Here are types of engineering that you might want to pursue in college:

1. Electrical Engineering

This type of engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. Electrical Engineering has various fields ranging from power engineering, computer engineering, robotics, control, and telecommunication. Some electrical engineers are also hired for innovation and power systems. They also design circuits and sometimes work as architectural and engineering managers. This is a practical course where there is more than a 7% growth outlook. If you are interested in electricity and its application you may consider studying this field.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 7% projected growth

Average Pay: The average salary for an Electrical Engineer in the Philippines is ₱272583. The average salary for an electrical engineer is $90,501 per year in the United States.

Board Exam: You needed to pass Electrical Engineer Licensure Examination to get your PRC ID.

2. Civil Engineering

Civil engineers design, build and supervise infrastructure projects and systems. They are more on practical planning. They are more on planning for road, railways, construction, and management. Civil engineering has a wide range including water engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical, transport, and can work as project management. Some civil engineers also work as quantity surveyors and environmental engineers and work locally as municipal engineers. This has also an 8% projected growth outlook. If you aspire to build or construct then this field might be the best for you.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 8% projected growth

Average Pay: In the United States, civil engineers earn an average annual wage of $93,270.The average salary for a Civil Engineer in the Philippines is ₱260188.

Board Exam: Civil Engineers Licensure Examination

3. Chemical Engineering

This type of engineering is more in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, microelectronics, electronic and advanced materials, polymers, business services, and biotechnology. Chemical engineers develop economical commercial processes to convert raw material into useful products. This involves plastic engineers, petroleum engineers, food engineers, and process engineers. This is a very interesting type of engineering where you were able to develop new products that can be consumed by the large population such as pharmaceutical products. You can also become a chemical analyst if you pursue this field.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 9% projected growth

Average Pay: The median annual wage for chemical engineers was $108,540. The average salary for a Chemical Engineer in the Philippines is ₱303103.

Board Exam: Chemical Engineer Licensure Examination (Philippines)

4. Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is the study of objects and systems in motion. Their main job is to design power-producing machines, such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines. They design and oversee the manufacturing of many products ranging from medical devices to new batteries. This involves acoustical engineering, automotive engineering, mechatronics engineering, and can work as a marine engineer.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 7% projected growth

Average Pay: The average salary for a Mechanical Engineer in the Philippines is ₱272109. The average salary for a Mechanical Engineer is $82385 per year in the United States

Board Exam: Mechanical Engineer Licensure Examination (Philippines)

5. Geodetic Engineering

This is also a five-year degree program that deals with collecting and measuring spatial data using technologies and instruments. Their main concern is to gather data related to the earth's surface and use them to produce spatial information systems, maps, plans, charts, and other products.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 6% projected growth

Average Pay: The average geodetic engineer salary in the Philippines is ₱472530 annually. The national average salary for a Geodetic Engineer is $90,529 per year in the United States.

Board Exam: Geodetic Engineer licensure exam (GELE) (Philippines)

6. Computer Engineering

Computer engineering is a branch of engineering that integrates several computer sciences and electronic engineering fields required to develop computer hardware and software. Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microcontrollers, microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit design. It offers too many job opportunities such as development, designing, digital marketing, IT manager, etc. This ranges from software engineers, hardware engineers, and network engineers. If you are interested in programming such as java, pascal language, or aspire to be a developer you may want to pursue this course or be a software engineer.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 2% projected growth

Average Pay: The average salary for a Software Engineer in the Philippines is ₱444922. The average salary for a computer engineer is $52,112 per year in the United States

Board Exam: This does not require any board exam.

7. Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineers devise efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, information, and energy to create something economical. Most industrial engineering students are those who are interested in the business and engineering fields. Industrial engineers study how workers perform their jobs, the goal is to reduce the time it takes to perform a certain job and redistribute work to require fewer workers for a given task. You can work as a logistics and supply engineer, product development engineer, management engineer, and research engineer for a particular project. If you are interested in economics and the application of mathematics then you might consider this field.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 14% projected growth

Average Pay: The average salary for an Industrial Engineer in the Philippines is ₱213706. The median annual wage for industrial engineers was $88,950 US.

Board Exam: A certification exam will be given. The Certified Industrial Engineering (CIE) examination is a certification exam intended for fresh graduates of Industrial Engineering as well as those who have relevant experience. (Philippines)

8. Aeronautical Engineering

Aerospace engineering is the primary field of engineering concerned with the development of aircraft and spacecraft. This engineering is growing in popularity for its interesting field of workspace.  This ranges from Aircraft Design Engineer, Aircraft Structural & Power Plant Engineer, Aircraft Operation, Performance Engineer, Research & Development Engineer to Aeronautical Engineering Consultant. You can design programs that may help the national defense such as missiles, warcraft, and other explosives. This is a very interesting field that is vastly growing.

Field: 4-5 year degree program (may vary)

Growth: 8% projected growth

Average Pay: $118,610 per year in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. ₱116,714 annually in the Philippines as average.
